Cambodia Sends Additional Peacekeepers to Central African Republic

Phnom Penh, July 5, 2024 – Cambodia has dispatched a new contingent of 244 peacekeepers, including 36 women, from Multi-Role Engineering Unit 468 to join the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).

The deployment ceremony, held at the Training School for Multinational Peacekeeping Forces in Kampong Speu province, was presided over by Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Coordination Committee for UN Peacekeeping Operations, Sok Chenda Sophea.

During his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister relayed commendations from Prime Minister Hun Manet, emphasizing the significant contributions of Cambodian forces in global peacekeeping efforts. He lauded the troops for their dedication and readiness, noting Cambodia's established reputation for contributing effectively to UN humanitarian missions.

"Cambodia holds its Blue Helmet peacekeepers in high regard," Sok Chenda Sophea stated. "Your courage and dedication not only bring honor to our country but also contribute significantly to global efforts toward peace, stability, and security."

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the challenges of the mission environment in the Central African Republic and urged the peacekeepers to remain vigilant, prioritize their safety, and adhere strictly to UN protocols to ensure the success and integrity of their mission.

“This deployment underscores Cambodia's long-standing commitment to international peacekeeping. Over the years, our troops have gained recognition for their effectiveness and dedication across various UN missions globally, reflecting the Royal Government's steadfast support for international peace and security initiatives,” according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The event was also attended by a representative of the United Nations and senior military officials.
